Excavations at Lawn Farm – Medieval Moated Site
6th July 1999
Progress report: Clearer Indications
Trench 1: A ‘dovecote’ remains the strongest possibility for this circular stone structure. The girl in the foreground is excavating a gulley in which 12th-14th century pottery has been found.
Trench 2: It is now thought that this freestanding stone structure marks the remains of an external stone staircase to an otherwise half timbered building. There are still indications of an adjacent kiln or oven, but we are not sure as to its original usage.
Looking across the site : Trench 2 in the foreground, Trench 1 in the background.
