1st July 1999
Progress report: 7 Photos & Mediaeval Pottery!
View across the site with Bentilee in the background
Another view with fishpond in the foreground
View of ‘dovecote’ (trench 1) with the moat clearly visible to left hand side.
View through ‘dovecote’ entrance with the only squared-off ‘ashlar’ stone on the door-jamb – front left. In the centre Jamie Patrick excavates a rubble filled pit – possibly the result of post-medieval robbing. The only medieval pottery so-far this year came from this pit.
Some of the medieval pottery found this year
Trench 2: In the foreground the walls and stone flooring from last years dig are uncovered. The puddle in the middle is where we excavated a burnt area suggesting this was some kind of oven. At the back supervisor Alison Parkes excavates an apparent continuation of these walls.
