Progress report : Words and Pictures by Noel Boothroyd

After seeing rainwater pool in the wide ditch we now think it would have acted as an effective drain after all. This shows the much deeper cut as it turns along the outside of the smaller room.

A view of the doorway into the smaller room after it has been cleaned up, with the shaped doorjambs visible on each side.

Further along the same long wall there was a blocked up doorway, identified by the straight joints in the stonework at the edge of the old doorway and the more irregular bonding in the infill. This would have opened straight into the ditch, suggesting the ditch was a later addition to the building.
