Progress report : Words and Pictures by Noel Boothroyd
Bad weather at the start of the week made the area we were investigating too wet to work in so we opened another 5m wide strip next to it. Here more medieval walls were uncovered, part of the same large building. One long wall running north-south was in a surprisingly wide foundation trench, shown partly excavated at the bottom of the picture.
Another wall, not indicated on the geophysics interpretation, ran off this wall at right angles but the rubble-filled foundation trench appears to cut it. Is this evidence for an earlier phase of building?
Lots of medieval pottery continues to be found, including this jug handle with green glaze and stamped decoration.
